I mean, with an extra bed lying around empty and you not there, I can see where he would be much more tempted to sleep there instead of on the couch in the living room. And that would explain why he felt the need/impulse to clean things up - he was already in the room and might have felt bad for sleeping in your bed, so he cleaned up while he was in there.
